Introduction
The Organ Transplant Center at CMUH performs an average of 120 liver transplantations per year. It also completed the first ABO-incompatible liver transplantation in Central Taiwan in 2006, with 76 successful cases since then. The Center is known for its exceptional immunosuppressive protocols, and 24-hour postoperative intensive care. It boasts clinical outcomes comparable to that of the best organ transplant centers around the world with 1-yr and 5-yr survival rates at over 90% and 85%, respectively.
In addition to liver transplantation, the center regularly performs kidney, lung, heart, corneal and hematopoietic stem cell transplantations. The Center’s superintendent, Professor Long-Bin Jeng, studied under Dr. Thomas Starzl at the University of Pittsburgh, often considered the “father of modern transplantation”. Professor Jeng continues to advance organ transplantation research and focuses on training future transplant surgeons.

Organ Transplant Surgery Training

Prospective trainees of the Center have the opportunity to observe liver transplant surgery, colorectal surgery, and thoracic surgery.

Other study objectives include

  1. Pre-transplantation living donor selection
  2. Organ transplantation surgical techniques and protocol
  3. Knowledge on the use of immunosuppression agents and its related complications
  4. Awareness of patient long-term complications, including rejection, infection, de novo malignancy, etc. and their treatments

Organ Transplant Anesthesiology Training

The center also specializes in anesthesiology and nursing training for organ transplant surgery. Trainees will be able to observe operating room anesthesiology procedures, sterilization, handover protocols from the OR to ICU, as well as post- operative processes such as monitoring of patients in the ICU, and pain and stress relief measures.

The department of anesthesiology is also an integral part of the Pain Management and Research Center of CMUH, an interdisciplinary center for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, combining anesthesiology, neurology, rehabilitation, acupuncture, orthopedics, family medicine, and hospice & palliative care. Trainees will have the opportunity to join the center’s team to observe quality pain-management service.
